Bowl Predictions: How Will Pitt's And The Big East Bowls Shape Out?

New, 9 comments

Six of the Big East's eight teams are bowl bound. The only teams left out? Rutgers and Cincinnati.

So how will the games turn out? Will the Big East be completely embarrassed? Not likely. In fact, I like the matchups the conference has and expect them to do well.

BBVA Compass Bowl - Pitt (7-5) Vs. Kentucky (6-6): I'm not too impressed with the Wildcats. High-scoring team with no defense. They've also got some bad losses to teams like 4-8 Ole Miss and mediocre 6-6 Georgia and Tennessee teams. Kentucky played Auburn pretty close, but struggled to barely beat Louisville. Can they beat Pitt? Sure they can, but I'll take my chances with the Panthers. Winner: Pitt

Fiesta Bowl - UConn (8-4) Vs. Oklahoma (11-2) : Any BCS matchup would be difficult for any Big East team. Personally, I think West Virginia is the only Big East team capable of winning a BCS game. It'd be great for UConn to win this game, but I just don't see it. Winner: Oklahoma

Champs Sports Bowl - West Virginia (9-3) Vs. North Carolina State (8-4): As the season went on, I think the Mountaineers have looked better and better. This is a matchup of two defensive teams. WVU has been good, giving up no more than 21 points all season, but the Wolfpack are the No. 2 ranked defense in the country. Still, the Mountaineers' three losses have been to teams all above .500, while N.C. State has lost games to some pretty medicore teams including 6-6 East Carolina and 6-6 Clemson. Winner: West Virginia

Car Care Bowl - South Florida (7-5) Vs. Clemson (6-6): Clemson's had some pretty good wins and has only lost to teams over .500. They're also going to be essentially playing a home game, so I'll go with the Tigers. Winner: Clemson

New Era Pinstripe Bowl - Syracuse (7-5) Vs. Kansas State (7-5): KSU doesn't have much of a resume, but they do have Daniel Thomas who rushed for nearly 1,500 yards this season. Syracuse, though, has a top 15 defense and will be playing a home game in New York. Plus, I think they're motivated to do extremely well after having a pretty good season. Winner: Syracuse

Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl - Louisville (6-6) Vs. Southern Miss (8-4): This one might be the hardest to predict. Southern Miss is a pretty good team and lost two games by a total of two points. But they've got next to no defense, giving up 40 points or more an astonishing five times this year. Flip a coin on this one. We know the Cardinals defense is decent and with QB Adam Froman and RB Bilal Powell back, I'll say they'll have just enough offense to win. Winner: Louisville
