After a slew of cupcakes in the non-conference portion of the basketball schedule this year, Pitt gets another rare test in a game with Davidson today. Outside of the Purdue game, the Panthers haven't had much competition so far since the Gonzaga game was canceled.
The Panthers will get a good benchmark in Davidson, which enters 7-1. The Wildcats bring one of the nation's best scorers with them in guard Jack Gibbs. Gibbs averages just over 25 points a game and it goes without saying that Pitt will be hard-pressed to contain him. Gibbs is hardly the only scorer for Davidson, however. The team also has Brian Sullivan, who averages 17.6 points per contest, as well as Peyton Aldridge (14.6 ppg) and Jordan Barham (13.5 ppg).
Containing Gibbs will be a start, but Pitt definitely can't sleep on the other guys.
The Panthers will need to be particularly wary of Davidson's three-point shooting. The Wildcats hoist up an unreal 29.6 shots beyond the arc per game. To say they live or die by the three might be an understatement.
