Report: WVU Rejected by SEC & ACC

According to a Brett McMurphy tweet, Big East sources are reporting that West Virginia University has been rejected for membership by both the SEC and ACC. If this turns out to be true, it's the perfect reason why critics of Pitt's ACC move are misguided; if you're not proactive, you can be left in the dust, no matter who you are.

if this is true

and i’m not totally convinced that it is due to how much misinformation is floating around right now but i actually kinda feel bad for WVU. if they get left out in the cold (and once this thing shakes out the cold is gonna be like antartica cold) in this re-alignment deal, well that’s totally bogus. as a stout hater of all things WVU i still think their on-field/on-court product is too good to ignore. i realize they have no media market to speak of and their academics are embarrassingly bad but they can play ball and they do it to a packed house. that’s gotta count for something, it’s certainly more than butgers has to offer. i don’t know, i still think they’ll find a seat when the music stops but i guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Before you make ignorant comment about academics take time to check your facts and using US News and world report as your only source make me think you should ask Pitt for your money back. If the academics are so bad why would we have 25+ Rhodes scholars?

that i’d never see the $$ if i won but i’ll certainly go for a sig bet if you want it. and i dont know but i’d say 13-9 sticks out as a fairly big win for the panthers within the last 30 yrs.

Sad Times

As happy as I am with the move to the ACC, this is really sad news for me. I sincerely hope that WVU lands in a decent home and that we can continue the Backyard Brawl.

WVU is in a tricky spot

They cant get into the B1G and the ACC. If this report is true, their only option may be a merged Big East/Big 12. Personally, the ACC would make perfect sense - especiallly with Pitt and Syracuse there now.

That said - not sure I feel sorry for them. They are, after all, West Virginia. While I don’t think I hate them, I definitely root for them under no circumstances.

Brawl

I just wrote an entire piece on the Backyard Brawl and why I think the two teams should continue to play despite not being in the same conference. The comments from that article (and in other recent posts) have been incredibly favorable of WVU and hoping they land in a good spot.

I don’t feel sorry for WVU, but I also don’t wish ill will of them. This is a rivalry and I’d expect if the tables were turned, WVU would be doing their fair share of laughing at Pitt’s expense.

I don’t have ill will against Pitt’s fans or the students/athletes to go there, but I’m not going to be “rooting” for Pitt as an entity.

I feel bad for WVU

That said, I don’t think ACC officials deemed the school up to conference snuff in market and academics. (Considering the state’s resources, I think WVU does quite well.) As for the SEC, I can see it as a last option for #14 and a possible contender for #15-16 if it goes that far. Slive has to be eyeing some other possibilities before calling Morgantown.

What has to sting WVU is the rescue of the Big 12 and the likelihood that after bringing in Brigham Young, the Big 12 will stop at 10 (Texas apparently doesn’t want Texas Christian). There goes that westward option.

For the next few years, the Mountaineers may be relegated to a ridiculously diminished Big East football conference that might invite who knows what, especially since the non-football members are in the majority (welcome, Memphis!). Panthers and Orange fans should be grateful the ACC extended their schools life preservers.

Hadn’t read that about the Big 12, but it’s an interesting thought. I’d think they’d try to add a few more teams, though, instead of doing the bare minimum to stay alive.
