Pitt and close games

If you have followed Pitt football for the last year, you know there is one constant Achilles heal with the team: they have not won any of their close toss-up games. Last year, Pitt went 6-6, but had they simply split their close games, the team goes 8-4 or even 9-3 (the Duke game comes to mind). Given the amount of parity in the game today and with a regular season made up of only 12 games, the close games are what often determines the fate of a college football program and the coaching staff.

And so far on this young season, Pitt has already lost their first close game against Iowa last week. It is too early to determine whether Pitt will be cursed in the close game scenario again this year. But one thing is for certain: if Pitt is to ever turn the program around from a 6 game winner to a consistent 8 game winner, they will need to find a way to improve come the 4th quarter. I don't know if it's strength conditioning, the mental mind-set, whatever it may be. But it needs to change.

Right now, the typical Pitt fan is expecting the team to "Pitt" the game away and find a new way to lose come the 4th quarter. Like Anson said in the post-game thread, your typical Pitt fan would have been shocked if the Iowa kicker didn't knock in the 55 yard game-winning kick last week. This mentality needs to change.
