Pitt Basketball: Gilbert Brown Impressive In Dunk Contest Defeat

Gilbert Brown had an impressive outing on Friday (Photo by Nick Laham/Getty Images)

Gilbert Brown participated in Friday's Denny's College Slam Dunk Contest and fared pretty well. Still, he fell just short in the semifinal round.

Star-divide

Cheering him on were Brad Wanamaker and Gary McGhee, who will both be playing in the All-Star game this weekend.

Gil threw down two dunks to advance into the semifinal round of four. He went first in that round and a between the legs reverse landed him a score of 49 and it looked like he would reach the final. But a 50 by You Tube sensation Jacob Tucker and a 50 by by UNC-Asheville's John Williams ended Brown's run. Jacob's 50 was legitimate, but Williams' was a bit overratedas he jumped over fellow contestant Will Coleman, then ran to the rim for a dunk. He didn't dunk over Coleman while dunking or even with the ball. A strange dunk and I'm surprised he got a 50 out of it.

Yes, I am complaining about a college dunk contest score. This is how badly I wish Pitt were still playing.

Tucker landed several impressive dunks on his way to the title.

Gil on Butler Game

During the dunk contest one of the announcers said he asked Gil “So, how do you beat Bulter?”…He said Gil laughed and said seriously that they (Pitt) were too focused on the scouting report instead of just going out beating the guy in front of them. I probably shouldn’t read into this, but I’m going to…Does this fall back on Dixon? Were the players too busy thinking about matchups and player tendencies instead of just going out and playing? When you are the 1 seed, the other team should be the one trying to out coach you. You should just be able to go out and play PItt basketball and beat an 8 seed.

Regarding the dunk contest, Gil’s dunk was definately better than Williams. I couldn’t believe they gave him a perfect score. But like you said, hard to complain about dunk contest celebrity judging.

To be honest, I don't know

Hard for me to fault Dixon in that game in my opinion. They only had one game to prepare for Butler, so I don’t fault them for any of the preparation for that game. If you think the preparation in general has them too focused on things like scouting reports, that’s an entirely different matter and one that could be up for debate.

It was also hard to win that game because of the way Butler shot in the first half. Pitt also shot well, but so much of their game is tied into stopping the other team from scoring - they couldn’t do that.

Good point....

…how much could Dixon really cover in one day of practice. Still not sure what Gil was getting at with his response….I guess he felt that they were thinking too much instead of just playing. I’m sure Sheldon Mack hitting every 3 pointer he took, even some beyond NBA range, will get inside your head a little as a team…
