Pitt basketball recruiting: Panthers reportedly off the table for former commit Mustapha Heron

Aaron Doster-USA TODAY Sports

Former basketball commit Mustapha Heron was Pitt-bound until decommitting earlier this year. He was a huge get at the time for head coach Jamie Dixon and as time went on, he became even more pursued.

Keep in mind that the decommitment came only a few weeks after he said he was still entrenched as a Pitt commit. Heron said shortly afterwards that he was wide open and 'wanted to be recruited', according to his coach. At the time, Pitt wasn't officially ruled out and his coach said he didn't have any leaders for his services.

That changed recently and a few days ago, Heron came out with a new list ... one that didn't include the Panthers. Whether or not his list will change is up for debate, but it doesn't seem like he's considering Pitt anymore.

As I wrote at the time of his decommitment, it was difficult to believe that the Panthers could still land him. Whenever a player opts to break a commitment, it becomes harder and harder to envision them going back to their original choice. Pitt may still spend some time pursuing Heron, but for now, it looks as if fans can officially move on.
