Scott Barnes has been busy lately.

Last week, the new Pitt athletic director gave out a contract extension to women's basketball coach Suzie McConnell-Serio. This week, it was Holly Aprile's turn for a new contract.

Aprile is the softball coach and while we don't talk much softball around these here parts, her signing was notable. That's mostly because the team is fresh off its best season in school history with a 37-22 record. Aprile and the school reached a deal on a new three-year contract, which will take her through the 2018 season.

Last year, the program had a banner year, unexpectedly reaching the ACC Final and getting into their first NCAA Tournament. Aprile and her coaches were named the 2015 National Fast Pitch Coaching Staff of the Year for the Mid-Atlantic Region.

It's early but so far, Barnes has made two excellent retentions of coaches making considerable progress in their respective programs.
