I get the impression that Pitt has many rivals in football. Some are relatively minor rivalries, like Virginia Tech and Boston College. Some are barely rivals at all (I'm thinking Syracuse). There are teams like Cincinnati and Louisville which are rivals by virtue of the Big East days.
However, the Panthers also have some bona fide rivals; I'm talking teams you want Pitt to beat so bad you can't stand it when they lose. West Virginia Mountaineers. Penn State Nittany Lions. Need I say more?
My question is this: where does Notre Dame fit in this range of rivalry, this spectrum of spite? On a scale of Syracuse to Penn State, where do the Irish fall?
